Freyja

Freyja

(Freya, Freyia)

"Lady", "mistress". Norse goddess of love and fertility. She also had an association with death, as in some accounts half of those men slain in battle were awarded to her. She was originally one of the Vanir deities, daughter of Njord and sister of Freyr. However, she became a member of the Aesir after she married Odin, although at this point she becomes confused with Frigg, who was also given as the consort of Odin. Freyja and Frigg may have been different aspects of the same deity. She was the mother of the minor goddess Hnossa. Among her possessions were the famous necklace known as the Brisingamen and a chariot drawn by two cats.
