Thor

Thor

(Donar, Thunor)

Nordic god of war and of the sky, associated especially with thunder. Son of Odin. His mother was usually given as the earth goddess Jord (Iord), but alternatively he was said to be the son of Fjorgynn or Hlodyn. His wife was the goddess Sif. He lived in a hall named Bilskirnir ("strong"). Thor was said to have been the strongest of the gods and their foremost defender. His most famous attribute was his hammer Mjollnir, which caused thunder when struck and lightning when thrown. He also owned a belt which doubled his strength when worn and a pair of iron gauntlets. He rode in a chariot drawn by two goats. In Scandinavia, Germany, and England he gave his name to the fourth day of the week, known in English as Thursday. At Ragnarok, Thor was to slay the Midgard-serpent, only to perish in turn from the serpent's poison.
